If money wasn't a issue, we will probably wouldn't questioning about the subject and go everywhere we fancy following our moods, but since we are not Berlusconi or, for the one not family with the Italian "barzellette", the more popular Bill Gate , unfortunately we are an ordinary couple with ordinary jobs and money is for us a matter.
We dug into few bloggers but maybe we haven't done our homework properly as we can't figure the budget even based on other's experiences, probably because the subject is so vary and undefined and really depend of how you want to spend your holiday and what to do.
So based on nothing more than guessing we will budget it a $50 per day each for 9 months and here it start the discussion "where our money will bring us".
This estimate will be for each of us including (hopefully) food, accommodation, local transports and some excursions or adventures like a scuba diving experience in Thailand, rafting in NZ or gambling in Las Vegas, cool!
On top of that a big chunk of our budget will flow away with the preparation of this trip, which will cover the essential RTW ticket , insurance (a must) and some gears, not to forget visas and vaccinations where need it.
Flight wise, thank to the soaring of the fuel cost in the last months, airline fares are getting pricier than ever and a trip that we had in mind gone up from few months ago from £1300 to a massive £1700, which means a hell of a difference to us since with this £400 we would have probably stay for months indulge ourself in a lost paradise somewhere in Thailand, damn it!
We are getting some quotes from the major airlines company and main travel agents in the travel backpacking industry: Oneworld, Staralliance, Sta Travel, Flight Centre and Travel bag are only a few.
Between £250/400 will go to the travel insurance which we are working now to find out the best options. So far it comes up on our research few big names such as World Nomads, apparently a company set up with backpackers in mind, Columbus , Sta Travel and American express and the price will vary also accordingly if we would include or not our gadgets. It will definitely worth to shop around although I reckon all companies will be the same when it comes to claim it, touch wood hopefully will not be our case.
This will bring up roughly a whopping budget of ..... (drum roll)... £ 9'500 pp, not bad....just being sarcastic!
If we start thinking about what we could have instead of this trip with this money, the rational side of myself will start weeping considering once we will be back we will have no jobs or home to stay and of course 10k less on our account each, OICH!
This amount could be a good sum to put down as a deposit for a lovely place which we could call home, although for me home is everywhere.
Well …. in any case this amount will not make a big difference considering we will still have then to be tie up to a mortgage for at least the next 20 years (I am trying to convince myself if you didn't get it). Probably if our parents would found out how much we will be spending (which they will probably do, after we buy our tickets which will be unlikely to late, ups dad!) they will say we are nuts but we could always made up the excuse we would opt to give up to the cost of an economy car for this awesome trip and once back we will drive our clapped out old "retro" vespa and my old dented Lancia Y Elefantino blue , which will do until we will not win the lottery.
Originally, we thought about a year trip but after figuring out the above expensive that we will occur we cut down our time frame to 9 months but obviously if we manage to save a bit along the way we could always extend it.
See our itinerary's idea to view our possible route although we still have a lot of asterisks and it is not finalize yet, but we are getting there!
